About Horton Plains National Park
Amidst the cooling mist and the glittering dew drops on grass, the hike through Horton Plains is simply breathtaking. Though visitors complain of the price being a little too high, serious explorers leave the park completely satisfied. Unlike other national parks in Sri Lanka where a jeep safari involves seeing herds of elephants, Horton Plains offers a completely unusual experience. Visitors can enjoy a 15km upward hike, passing through grassy plains, glistening streams and herds of deer. The elevation of the plateau makes the temperature pleasantly cool, though a light jacket is usually required during the morning time.
The major attraction is the World’s End, a world famous cliff where one can drink in the picturesque sight of mountains, mist and the Sri Lankan coastline far beyond. A little further is the Baker’s Falls, a beautiful little waterfall where thousands of birds and butterflies dwell. As for animal spotting, the Sambar Deer is a definite sight, along with monkeys, mongoose and giant squirrels. A large number of migratory birds visit the park, providing wonderful opportunities for bird watching. There is a well-defined circular path that leads visitors through the plains and right back to where they started; the hike is slightly strenuous and long, taking an average of 4 hours to be completed. For the enthusiasts, the trek among the hilly grasslands is a must do, as the pleasure of animal spotting, bird watching, and nature walking combine to provide an unforgettable experience.
