About Demodara Railway Loop
Demodara railway track is remarkable for its unique construction. It was built by the British in the 20th century to transport the tea plantations to Colombo from Uva region. The train that starts at Colombo enters the Demodara station which has only one platform and then coiling around a mountain, enters a tunnel which is built underneath the station. This loop is called Demoder loop which is an eye catching sight. This kind of wondrous train journey that seems like a merry-go-round was, according to the locals, inspired by a ‘turban’ worn by men. When the engineering team was in a fix as to how to construct the track on a high mountain, a farmer suggested them to build it in the way he had tied his turban. It is unknown whether they followed it or not, but it has ended up being a spiral route like that of turban. The track is 441 long and is one of its kind in the whole world. Don’t miss this spiral ride!
