About Pedro Tea Factory
The Pedro Tea Factory is located just outside the town centre and is a small tea factory. This place provides you a glimpse of you the tea is manufactured. It is situated about 3.5km east of Nuwara Eliya on the way to Kandapola. The tea factory is a symbol of 19th century engineering which was built in 1885. You can take a half hour guided tour of the factory which is quite interesting.
It is very exciting to see how and where the tea is processed. Being one of the oldest black tea factories in Sri Lanka this place has a beautiful view of the surrounding tea farms. The tea factory is closed between 12:30 and 2 pm. Since the type of tea processed here is very light , the processing takes place at night since it is colder that time and so you are not likely to see the full process.
There are 8 grades of tea produced here and the most striking part is the whole process is done manually, by hands and old fashioned machinery. The final product is sold to various big tea companies. You can take a walk around the factory and take in the aroma of the freshly brewed tea!
A major point to keep in mind is the prohibition of photography at this place. Yes. You cannot take photographs at this place. Apart from this, the Pedro Tea Factory is worthy of a visit!
