Spread over 7146 hectares, Kambalakonda Reserve Forest was declared a wildlife sanctuary by the in 2002. Located 20 KMs away from Vishakhapatnam, the area belonged to Maharajah of Vizianagaram till as far as 1970, when it was brought under control of Andhra Pradesh Forest Department
The Kambalakonda Project, as it called, has popularized the concept of eco-centers. Eco-centers operate on principles of ‘sustainable tourism’. People of nearby villages are being trained as guides to help tourists and trekkers. If you are going on a trek or safari on Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, do take services of these guides; this will help you learn so much more about birds & animals that are typical to the Eastern Ghats.
The Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is home to about dozen panthers who can be sometimes spotted gobbling on carcasses of deer etc. In fact, the deer begin to approach the main entrance at dusk to protect themselves from panther attacks at night. Visitors have the best chance of spotting wildlife at the lake inside the sanctuary which is a beautiful site. Wildlife Sanctuary timings are between 9 AM and 4 PM. There is a 15 KM long trail that weaves over and around the four hills of Kambalakonda, promising amazing views of the lush green forest.
