About Bavikonda
Bavikonda (Hill of wells), the name indicates that the hill has many wells which was used to store the rain water. It is much renowned tourist spot in Andhra State. Between 1982 – 1987, an excavation was conducted here which brought the entire Buddhist establishments to spot light. Mahachaitya along with relic caskets, Huge Vihara complex with rectangular halls, a refectory, etc. were founded here. Also Roman and Satavahana coins, pottery which belongs to 3rd century BC till 2nd century AD were excavated here. This site is declared as the one of the oldest and extremely sacred Buddhist sites in all over Asia. This site is the standing example for Buddhist Civilization which existed in Southern India as well.
