About Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. This natural wonder is home to animals such as the Indian Bison, elephant and deer. Tigers can also be spotted here. Elephant rides are available, arranged by the forest department of Kerala. The nearest large town to the Sanctuary is Sultanbatheri (Sultan Battery), which is 16 kilometers to the south west. There are local buses between Mananthavadi, Kalpetta and Sultan Bathery every ten to twenty minutes. Autorickshaws are a good way of making small trips around the district.
Established in 1973, the site is under consideration by UNESCO as a site of special scientific interest. The park is home to a number of indigenous peoples who’ve said to have been in the area from at least 1,000BC.
