About Paro Taktsang
Paro Taktsang or Taktsang Palphug Monastery is a temple complex located in the upper valley of Paro, Bhutan. It was founded in the 8th century as a Meditation cave. The temple complex was first built in 1692 across the Taktsang Senge Samdup cave, the place where Padmasambhava (the tutelary deity of Bhutan) is said to have meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours in the 8th century. There are four main temples and also shelters for residing inside the monastery. It houses total eight caves among which the cave where Padmasambhava resided and meditated is known as ‘Pel Phuk’.
There is a dark cave inside the Taktsang Palphug monastery where you can find many images of the Bodhisatvas. There are also several paintings on the inside walls of the monastery. The paintings are set on a pedestal that signifies the monarchy of the King of Nagas. There is a painting which depicts that a certain creature which has a body of a serpent and a human head is believed to reside in lakes, which means they are probably guarding the hidden treasures.
