Cooch Behar or Koch Bihar is located in the north-east part of West Bengal and is a planned town and known for its royal heritage. Set in the foothills of the Himalayas and surrounded by hills, Cooch Behar has been a favorite tourist destination since the British era.
Cooch Behar is situated on the eastern part of Dooars and since it has border with Assam it provides tourists’ passage to various other places. The name has been derived from the name of the tribe Koch Rajbongshi who are indigenous and settled this area. The word ‘Behar’ is the Sanskrit word derived from Bihar meaning ‘to travel’ so the kings of these tribes travelled through this land. It has rich cultural and historical heritage that is splendid.
The Cooch Behar Palace or Rajbari built in western style architecture is the most famous landmark and tourist attraction in town. This beautiful palace was built by the king Maharaja Nripendra Narayan in 1887 AD. Since India's independence Cooch Behar was ruled by Koch dynasty for almost 500 years. Cooch Behar has many lakes in and around it. Cooch Behar is divided in old and new parts of the town.
Cooch Behar is well connected with rest of the state. Climate is nice most of the year, but monsoon season could be avoided.
