Pashupatinath Temple is one of the the oldest and holiest temples for Hindus, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The name “Pashupatinath” means “God of Animals”. Pashupatinath Temple is a huge complex located on the banks of Bagmati River which flows across Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The main temple is built in pagoda style with a beautiful golden spire sitting as a crown on top of it. A number of legends revolve around the existence of this temple.
Every year this temple receives thousands of followers who come here to end their journey of life by being cremated near the sacred water of Bagmati River. Tourists get the opportunity to witness a cremation or a death ritual which is a common activity. These rituals are culturally atypical to the foreigners.
If one is fascinated by the framework of Hinduism, then this place has a lot to offer. The cremation ghats are truly a captivating site. The temple complex serves as a shelter to deers and monkeys. It is filled with sadhus (holy men) covered in bright colored paints who are tourist friendly and readily pose for pictures. Although only Hindus are allowed in the main temple, others can observe it from a distance. It is recommended to take a tour guide who can explain you the crematory rituals.
