About Kathmandu
Kathmandu city, the capital of Nepal is over 2,000 years old and rests at over 1,400 meters (4,600 ft) above sea level within a valley bounded by four mountains and measured as the gateway to tourism in Nepal. Whether you’re drumming through the traffic-jammed alleyways of the old town in a rickshaw, wondering at the medieval temples or escaping trekking touts in the backpacker district of Thamel, Kathmandu can be an exhilarating, astonishing and exhausting place.
Kathmandu is home to charms such as Boudhanath Stupa, Durbar Square, the Pashupatinath Temple and the Royal Palace (the site of the renowned 2001 massacre of the Royal Family by the then Crown Prince, and now transformed into the Narayanhiti Palace Museum). The mountains hold a captivating attraction for many who stopover Nepal. The trek to EBC (Everest Base Camp), a two-week trip starting with a nerve capturing flight to Lukla airport, is the most popular mountain activity. Another popular destinations is Annapurna base camp or the stunningly beautiful Annapurna Circuit trek which can be attained by an 8-15 day trek from Pokhara.
