About Torna Fort
The Torna Fort at a height of 1405 meters above sea level in the Sahyadri range is the tallest in the district of Pune. It is also known as Prachandgad which means ‘huge’ in Marathi- understandably so because of its spread. The fort is significant because it is the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji at the young age of 16 in 1646. It also marked his revolt against the Mughal Empire.
It is believed that the fort was built in the 13th century by shaivas -the followers of lord Shiva. In 1643 when Shivaji captured the fort, he renamed Prachandgad as Torna after Torna Devi. He also got several towers and monuments built around the fort to add to its beauty and defense.
A number of monuments like Bini darwaza, Kothi darwaza, Hanuman Bastion around the fort make the visit more interesting for history lovers as well as picnickers. Trekking along the steep hillside of the tallest fort makes it more challenging and inviting for adventure seekers.
