Mahabaleshwar is an expansive plateau encompassed by lush valleys and striped by sparkling rivers. The Krishna River with its source in the springs of Mahabaleshwar along with its tributaries the Koyna River and Venna River are believed to be the trimurtis- Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The name Mahabaleshwar was derived from Sanskrit words, Maha-bal-ishwar which literally means 'The Mighty Lord Shiva'- whose pristine and naturally occurred form is worshipped in the temple here, after which the city was named.
Mahabaleshwar in ancient days was a base of the chivalrous Marathas whose forts are still found in the region. Later during the British era, it reached new heights and gained fame and glory as one of the desired summer retreats.
