About Sheesh Mahal, Patiala
The most attractive tourist spot in Patiala, Sheesh Mahal was established in the year 1847 by Maharaja of Patiala named Narinder Singh. Maharaja Narinder Singh took extreme effort to construct and decorate this palace. The Sheesh Mahal served as residence for royal family of Maharajas of Patiala. Situated right behind the Moti Bagh Palace, Sheesh Mahal is also termed as “Palace of Mirrors”, as its one of the portion was decorated with astonishing colored glasses and mirrors. Maharaja Narinder Singh brought well skilled artists and decorators from Rajasthan and Kangra. These persons painted floral designs and poetic form of Bihari, Surdas and Keshav on the roofs and ceilings. Most of these paintings depict the Rajasthani style of art. Also you can walk over the bridge (Jhoola) which is laid across the artificial lake nearby the Sheesh Mahal.
Currently the Sheesh Mahal is converted as Museum. In the museum there are collections of medals which belong to the time period of 12th -20th century. Most these medals, approximately 3200 in number, were collected by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh and Maharaja Yadwinder Singh. The portraits of Maharajas can be seen on the walls of palace. The 19th century coin collection also exhibits the trade culture which prevailed in that century.
