About Patteeswaram Temple
Patteeswaram is the tiny village nearby Kumbakonam. The village got its name after the calf of divine cow Kamadhenu, called “Patti”. The village is famous for a Durga Temple which had contribution from various kingdoms like Cholas, Pandyas and Nayakars. This temple has five gigantic Gopurams and the temple is well maintained. Dhenupureeswarar Swamy and his consort Gyanambika are main deities in this temple.
The Cholas before going for battles had offered prayers to Goddess Durga in this temple. Also the statue of Nandi is placed little bit away from the straight line with Shiv Lingam unlike other Shiva Temple where Nandi will be exactly in line with Shiva Lingam. As per legend, Lord Shiva asked Nandi to move a bit , so that he can get the glimpse of Sambandar singing hymns on him. Devotees believe that the Goddess fulfills all their wishes.
