About Baijnath
Baijnath - The town with river Gomti flowing along is famous for a thirteenth century old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and believed to be one of all the twelve existing Jyotirlingas across India. It is after this temple infact that the town is named. The town has many more shrines all of which are equally popular amongst the locals and the people around, two of them being the Mahankal temple and the Mukut Nath temple. There are two very interesting facts about the place that in the entire town there doesn’t exist even a single shop of a goldsmith and secondly, unlike any other place in India the people in Baijnath do not celebrate Dussehra as a token of respect towards Ravana’s unflinching devotion to Lord Shiva. An annual state level function spread over five days is organized on Mahashivratri.
One can also take in a bit of the Tibetan flavor visiting the Tibetan monasteries in Chauntra, Chowgam and Sherabling a couple of kilometers away.
About 28 kms from Baijnath is another town called Billing which is famous the world over for paragliding and aero-sports and even hosts several national and international aero-sports events e.g. the Paragliding Pre-World Cup.
