About Chamoli
Welcome to Chamoli, the "Land of the Gods." Chamoli is well connected to other parts of Uttaranchal. Rishikesh, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Ukhimath, Srinagar and Gopeshwa are all linked by bus services. If you are coming from other parts of India, take the train to Rishikesh or get into an aircraft from Dehra Dun.
Chamoli is a district with headquarters in Gopeshwar. It was a part of the Pauri Garwhal District of Kumaon until 1960. The region features a lot of Hindu legend and scriptures.
Trekking is the main activity in Chamoli. Watch the beautiful valley of flowers. It is most famous for this natural beauty. Take a pilgrimage to Tungnath. Try out some skiing and winter sports up in the Himalayan Auli. Because Chamoli borders Tibet, Tibetan food influenced the locality. Taste the momos, Tibetan dumplings, fried noodles and Tibetan tea.
Way off the beaten track is the glacial lake of Roop Kund. It is more than five thousand meters high. Travelers who make it this far will be mingling with the clouds. Chamoli is the birthplace of the Chipko movement. The Chipko movement was an Indian movement that began in the 1970’s. Based on principles of non-violence, it involved hugging trees to stop them from being chopped down.
Some married women in the area wear toe rings of silver instead of wedding rings. Small studs and nose rings are fashionable accessories for women and girls. Take special care when trekking in the region. If you are participating in skiing or adventure sports, make sure the instructors are reputable, certified and the equipment used is of good quality.
