About Haldwani

Haldwani has been the headquarters of the Bhabar region of Nanital district since 1901. The town was briefly seized by rebels during the Indian rebellion of 1857. Haldwani is a small town with a vast nature to ponder upon. It’s not as popular with foreign tourists as Rishikesh, or with Indian pilgrims as Haridwar. But it is a place of beauty which provides an introduction to the lower himilayas. From Haldwani, travel further to the mountain destinations can be arranged.
There are many local delicacies in this town. Look out for Gajar Ka Halwa. Gajar Ka Halwa is a sweet dish containing almonds, milk and carrots. Haleem, made with lentils and mutton, has strong middle eastern influence. For those looking for something different, wander the town and look for evidence of Kumaoni culture. Kumaoni houses have stone walls and mud floors. There is a rich tradition of sculpture, and this is evident in many Kumaoni temples.
The state of Uttarakhand is known as the Land of the Gods. The state abounds with Hindu temples and pilgrimage centers. The hills of India have long been a place of retreat. For some, this retreat has been spiritual. The mountains have provided a place of reflection and meditation. For active treats, the hills are a step back from the chaos and the heat of India.
Take care while driving and trekking in the region. Always hire a good guide if you can, and avoid trekking alone.
