About Nanda Devi Temple
Nanda Devi Temple is situated in Almora itself. It is in the antechamber of a Shiva temple in a bazaar above the mall. Nanda Devi was the goddess worshipped by the Kumaon and Garwhal kings. Nanda Devi Temple has a typical Kumaoni architecture and is built of stones. It is one of the main attractions of the Almora town. The Nanda Devi Temple is one of the most important religious sites of the Kumaoni region. This temple is believed to be more than 1000 year old.
There are regular festivals in Almora to worship the goddess. Every year Nanda Devi Fair is held in Almora during months of August or September which draws large crowds from all over the state and tourist from abroad as well.
Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra is three week famous festival of Uttarakhand state and people from state, country and many parts of the world participate in it celebrated every 12 years.
This three week long Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra begins from Nauti village, 25 KMs from Karnaprayag. Procession is led by a four-horned ram which leads them to Shiva’s home at the base of Trishul Mountain. This journey passes through many villages and some rough terrain which include Roopkund Lake where hundreds of skeletons are submerged in the lake. Is is believed that goddess Nanda Devi used to see her face in this lake hence called Roopkund. The presence of many century year old human skeletons at Roopkund Lake is a mystery that is still unanswered.
