About Mudumalai National Park
Mudumalai National Park is the most significant sanctuary in the state, Mudumalai shares its border with Bandipur Sanctuary of Karnataka and Wayanad Sanctuary of Kerala. With its rich flora and fauna Mudumalai makes a wonderful habitat for the wildlife.
Positioned in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu the Mudumalai National Park is the bridge between the Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats. Previously it had been a hotspot for hunters but after the 1940s it was converted into a National Park by the state government. In 2007 it was pronounced as a tiger reserve.
The park’s vegetation includes tropical moist deciduous, tropical dry deciduous, semi-evergreen and tropical dry thorn forests with strips of bamboo scattered here and there.
Masinagudi, Thepakadu, Kargudi, Mudumalai, and Nellakota are the various sections which the National Park is made up of. Kargudi consists of a swamp area and few dormitories, Thepakadu is the entrance site, Mudumalai is the main area of the park where majority of the birds and the animals can be spotted, Masinagudi mostly consists of plantations, lodges and resorts and lastly Nellakota contains scrubs and dry forests.
The Bengal Tiger, The Stripped Hyena, The Flying Squirrel, The Asian Pit Viper, The Malabar Grey Hornbill, and The Serpent Eagle are some species of fauna that can be spotted at the National Park. The Park can be toured through Elephant, Jeep or Van Safaris. Tourists can also wander off to explore Ooty if they have time on their hands.
Mudumalai is famously known for its elephant camps. The elephant around the state are sent to this wonderful sanctuary for rest and rejuvenation. One can enjoy the scenes of elephants bathing and playing around in the streams. You can try a ride on elephant back and even try bathing an elephant.
