About Udgir Fort
Udgir Fort in the town of Udgir is a 12th Century fort built in the pre-Bahamani age, an important historical element of Latur district. It was named after the renowned Saint Udaygiri Rishi whose resting place is situated 60 feet under the fort. This edifice is enclosed by 40 feet deep channel. Tourists can also find exceptional inscriptions written in Persian and Arabic. Four water reservoirs named as Bada Baoli, Jeeta Zera, Som Tarth and Shakkar Baoli also dwell here.
The fort is memorable for the battle which took place between Maratha leader Bhau Sadhashivrao and Nizam of Hyderabad in 1761, shortly after which a treaty was signed. It is also said that the fort conceals deep tunnels between Bider and Bhalki fortresses.
