About Khangchendzonga National Park
Khangchendzonga National Park (previously named Kanchenjunga National Park) is located in Sikkim, and named after 8,586 mts. tall Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world.
Being located in inaccessible area of Sikkim has the advantage of the park remaining untouched to quite a large extent. The park is home to Himalayan Tahr, Snow leopard, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Tibetan antelope, wild ass, barking deer, flying squirrel and the red panda. There are more than 550 species of birds that are found in Khangchendzonga National Park such as snow pigeon, Asian emerald cookoo, Tibetan snow cock, Himalayan griffon etc.
Lot of trekking routes are present inside the park of which most routes starts from Yuksom (145 KMs from Gangtok). One can also come across Lepcha tribal settlements within the park.
Indian tourists need to take special permission from Inner-Line Permit from the State Home Department while foreign nationals would require a restricted area permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, Delhi, to get inside the park from the State Chief Wildlife.
The best time to visit this national park is April to May and August to October.
