Located on the north bank of Brahmaputra river of Assam State, Orang National Park is mostly swampy with dense grasslands and islands of the Brahmaputra. Spread over districts of Darrang and Sonitpur, the Orang National Park is one amongst many flora and fauna rich destinations in Assam. The landscape of the park is similar landscape to that of Kaziranga National Park and thus often termed as mini Kaziranga national park. This park is one of the oldest protected areas of North east India, yet one of the least known one.

The Orang National Park is habitat for Indian One-horned Rhinoceros. Pigmy hog, elephants, wild buffalo, swamp deer, tigers, Indian Rock Python, King Cobra, Cobra, Monitor Lizard are other wildlife seen in this park. Bengal Florican, an endangered bird species and Royal Bengal tiger are preserved in Orang National Park. The sanctuary is composed of marshes, grasslands, and streams flowing from the Brahmaputra. It’s often referred to as the miniature version of the Kaziranga National Park because of the similarities it shares with it. An alternative name for it is The Rajiv Gandhi National Park.

Earlier the area under which the park falls was occupied by the Orang Tribe. Many man-made water bodies present inside the park are believed to have been created by the tribals. Due to the fear of an epidemic the tribe left. Soon hunters started to catch game here. The territory was declared as a sanctuary in the year 1985 and then in 1999, it was presented with the status of a national park.

October till April is best time to visit the park. Visiting is restricted to 7:30AM-9:30AM and 2-3 PM, the park gate remains closed in between. Tezpur is the nearest town at a distance of 32 KMs and Guwahati is about 140 KMs from the park. Although the park is famous for the One-Horned Rhino and the Pygmy Hog there are many other animal and bird species that can be admired at the National Park such as the Bengal Fox, Tigers, Storks, the Hog Deer, and so on.

For accommodation there are two Inspection Bunglows at Silbori and Satsimlu inside the park. Advance permission from the Divisional Forest Officer, Mangaldoi is required to visit the park.

Tourists can engage themselves by taking a Safari or spending some time at the Forest Lodge.
