About Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary
Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the newest protected natural reserves, the lush Deciduous Forests of this Sanctuary are known to harbor the mythical abominable snowman called the Yeti and the local nomadic tribes are strife with plethora of related folklore. However, it is also known to provide haven to umpteen actual animals and includes the snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan Black bear and Himalayan red fox. Aerial fauna includes the hoary-bellied Himalayan squirrel, Assamese macaw, blood pheasant and grey backed shrike just to name a few.
The Sanctuary is also popularly called the ‘Paradise of Rhododendrons,’ and has a sprawling carpet of Red Rhododendrons covering the forest floor. The floral species also comprise of the blue poppy, the rare primulas and gentiana among many others, transforming the sanctuary into vibrant meadows of psychedelic flowers. Vegetation also includes pastures of Alpine fields, temperate forests and broadleaved woods.
It also offers exciting treks, specifically the Merak-Sakteng trek, which is an opportunity not available to all, due to the rough pathway but it also a once in a lifetime occasion to experience breath catching natural beauty. It is advised to keep the shutter at a ready to capture the rapture that nature has to offer.
Nearby getaways include the Tawang, which has been dubbed as the ‘Land of Dawn-lit Mountains,’ the Tarshigang and the Khaling Wildlife Sanctuary.
