About Alchi Monastery
Alchi Monastery or Alchi Gompa is a Buddhist monastery, is located at a distance of about 70 km west of Leh. This Buddhist Monastery Complex also known as Alchi Chos-kor is believed to have been founded in the early eleventh century by great translator Rinchen Zangpo.
Alchi is a quite unique in Buddhist art with a touch of Kashmiri tradition. Paintings and architecture of the monastery is little different from traditional Tibetan style. Alchi Monastery has some of the oldest paintings in Ladakh and complex has large statutes of Budha carved elaborately in wood. Most archaeologists believe that Alchi choskor is a treasure of historic art and proves the existence of Buddhist Kashmir.
