About Diskit
Located slightly off the little hamlet of Khalsar, Diskit is among the larger villages in Nubra Valley. The apricot plantations in this region are also a major attraction for tourists. The 350 year old Diskit Gompa is the largest and oldest monastery in the Nubra valley. The monastery belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetian Buddhism. The monastery was founded by Changzem Tserab, disciple of the founder of Gelugpa, Tsong Khapa.
In the prayer hall of the monastery, there is a statue of Maitreya Buddha, images of guardian deities, and a huge drum. On an elevated cupola is a fresco depicting the Tashilhunpo Monastery of Tibet.
Diskit has a few hotels and guest houses with very basic facilities. Local people also rent out rooms. Most campers prefer staying with locals as it is more comfortable. Tourists can enjoy the view of the snow-peaked mountains from the banks of the stream that runs through the village. Tourists should not miss out spending a night or two in the camp. They can enjoy a pollution-free, star studded sky, which seem magnified due to the altitude. Look out for a shooting star which leaves behind a shimmering trail and let the gurgle of the river lull you to sleep!!
