Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala and is situated in the foothills of Western Ghats. The region is evergreen forest. Named after renowned ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, Thattekad bird sanctuary is one of the important bird sanctuaries of India and certainly Kerala as well. It is one of the richest bird habitats of India
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is sandwiched between the branches of Periyar River. This flat and green plateau houses a range of bird species. Spread over 25 Sq Km, this bird sanctuary is home to some 270 species of Birds. Indian Pitta, Yellow browed Bulbul, Cormorants, Ceylon frogmouth, Emerald green pigeons, Mountain Hawk Eagles etc. The sanctuary is termed as “Cuckoo Paradise”, as the sanctuary is abode of variety of Cuckoo.
The weather in Thattekad remains pleasant throughout the year. A visit to Thattekad Bird Sanctuary should be avoided in monsoon season (June - September) as many parts of the sanctuary get cut off due to heavy rains. The best season to visit Thattekad is from October to March. Kochi is about 70 KMs from here and Aluva is at a distance of 48 KMs.
