About Thrissur
Thrissur, the fourth largest city of Kerala State of Southern India, was once a capital city of former Kingdom of Cochin. Thrissur is also mentioned as the “Cultural Capital of Kerala”, because of its immense contribution to the cultural, religious and spiritual beliefs of ancient Kerala. The entire Thrissur city is perched on 65 acre hillock called “Thekkinkadu Maidan”. The city served as a step stone for various Rulers like Arabs, Romans, Dutch, Portuguese and British to enter India.
Thrissur houses two major Hindu religious centers for both Shaivites and Vaishnavites, namely Vadakkumnathan Temple and Guruvayur Temple. Other than these two temples, tourists can come across various temples and churches like Thiruvambadi Shri Krishna Temple, Paramekkavu Temple, Our Lady of Lourdes Syro- Malabar Catholic Cathedral and Our Lady Dolours Syro-Malabar Catholic Basilica Church. Also India’s first Mosque, Cheraman Juma Masjid, was established here around 6th century AD. Thrissur zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the country.
Thrissur also possesses many cultural academies like Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy, Kerala Lalith Kala Academy, and Kerala Sahithya Academy. The city is buzzing with commercial and financial activities. During the month of April or May, the famous Pooram festival is celebrated in Vadakkumnathan Temple Maidan. During Pooram festival, the temple is decorated with colorful lights, elephants adorned with festive finery are exhibited in the Maidan and traditional music is played.
Rice is the staple diet here and primary ingredient used for various delicacies in Thrissur. Tourists should taste few items like Achappam, Kuzhalappam, and Vellayappam.
