About Sri Anantheshwara Temple
Being called as “Manjula Kshetram” and “the temple of 18 towns”, Sri Anantheshwara temple has rich historical background. The temple dating back to thousand years has intricately carved out wooden and stone Altar. The land where the temple was built was acquired by Parashurama from sea. He incarnated Ramabhoja, his devotee as a ruler to this land. Ramabhoja, on killing a snake accidentally, made a snake cut out silver peetham and installed hi Guru Parashurama in the form of Shivling on the Peetham and get relieved from Sarpa Dosha. The Shiv ling is termed as Sri Anantheshwara. The custom of visiting this temple before visiting Udupi Krishna Mutt still allowed by devotees. It is after worshipping Sri Anantheshwara continuously for 12 years, parents of Sri Madhwacharya was bestowed with a child. Also, Sri Madhwacharya disappeared while presenting a philosophical discourse in this temple. This spot of the temple from where Acharya disappeared from human sight is worshipped as a sacred spot.
