About Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in Chikmagalur and Shimoga districts of Karnataka, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is renowned for housing substantial tiger population. Exuberant greenery and picturesque hill back drops is real feast for nature lovers. The Sanctuary is about 40 KMs from Chikmagalur town and named after the river Bhadra which flows through it. Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary has two main parts Muthodi and Lakkavalli. Muthodi is the name of one of the villages inside the Sanctuary and therefore it is also called as Muthodi Wildlife Sanctuary sometimes. 

Located in the Western Ghats, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of about 500 sq. km. and has a variety of flora and fauna. Moist and deciduous forest in the sanctuary houses nearly 120 species of trees in it. Wild animals like Elephant, Tiger, Bison, Leopard, Chital, Wild boar and deer etc. are found in the sanctuary. A large number of bird species totaling over 250 are found in this sanctuary, most famous being Painted bush quail, Great Black Woodpecker, Malabar Parakeet, Black winged Kite, Red Spur fowl, King Vulture and Malabar Whistling Thrush.

The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary offers magnificent views of the hills and peaks like Kemmannugundi & Kallahathigiri are situated inside it. It is surrounded by steep slopes of Hebbe Giri, Baba Budan Giri hills and Mullayanagiri range. The beautiful 168 mts. high Hebbe Falls are also inside the Sanctuary and way goes through a bad stretch of un-paved path through private coffee estates.

Bird watching, trekking, Jeep Safari for spotting wild animals, water sports etc are some of the activities available for Tourists. There are many accommodations and dormitory are available within the sanctuary. Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is about 275 KMs from Bangalore.

During monsoons the sanctuary is very beautiful and vibrant, but you should be cautious of the leeches, take anti-leech precautions.
