Memorial Chorten is also known as Thimphu Chorten. It was built in 1974 by the late Queen Mother, Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck, as a memorial to the third king of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Durji Wangchuck. He is regarded as the ‘Father of Modern Bhutan’. Throughout the day the Chorten keeps bustling with devotees. It is one of the largest religious sites of the country. This Chorten is a splendid large monument sited appropriately with the magnificent mountains and peaceful landscapes surrounding it.
Recognized from afar by its golden bells and spires, the Stupa is unlike any in the entire country as it does not house any human remains.There are prayer wheels that are spun by people. Memorial chorten is distinguished for its unusual statues of Buddha. These statues are built in tantric tradition which is a very rare sight to see as the other Buddha statues are commonly peaceful in nature elsewhere. The Chorten is also enriched with beautiful carvings, paintings and Buddhist principles that provide a deep understanding of their rules and philosophies.
Also known as the ‘Seat of Faith,’ the Chorten is symbolic of the ‘Mind of Buddha’ and is yet another architectural piece of Bhutanese artwork, presenting elegant paintings and elaborate sculptures.
It is among the most iconic monuments in the country and is a must visit.
