About Elephant Pass, Jaffna
The Elephant Pass holds great significance for the country since it is located on the isthmus which connects the island to Sri Lanka’s main land. It is basically a monument to the Sri Lanka war heroes.
The Elephant Pass, being an important military base, was regularly used as a battle site during Civil Wars. Located in the gateway of Jaffna Peninsula, in the northern district of Sri Lanka, the Elephant Pass used to be the island’s largest salt field. It has been an important strategic base since 1760 and was built as a fort by the Portuguese. It was later rebuilt by the Dutch.
Before the beginning of the Civil War, this pass used to provide around 30-40 % of the total salt requirement of the country. It was later abandoned due to the rampant civil wars. In recent times the government has shown interest in rebuilding this Salt-ern. This pass is called as “Gateway to Jaffna” since it controls access to the Jaffna Peninsula.
There are tanks and bulldozers situated a few yards away which are quite interesting and well displayed. It is beautiful reminder of the past, which a few stories to tell!
Also, it is the only one of the few places where you can see the sun rise and sun down.
