About Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya
The Nagadipa Purana Vihara, houses the famous Rajayathana Stupa which is being worshiped since the 1st Century AD. This place is among one of the sixteen most sacred places being worshiped by the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. It is located on the Nainativu Island in Jaffna and is an ideal place to be toured. It is an important place for Buddhist pilgrims since it is believed that it is one of the three places which Lord Buddha visited.
A Bodhi tree is situated near the temple which conveys the idea of contemplation to the visitors. Besides this tree is silver painted dagoba which is painted silver to protect the limestone structure from the harsh sea winds. This is a unique feature which sets it apart from the other Buddhist Stupas.
A bronze Buddha statue was gifted by the Burmese in 1956 which is worshipped till date. The temple compound houses two sacred shrines which are quite remarkable. There is a folklore that a quarrel broke between two naga kings “Chulodara” and “Mahodara”. Lord Buddha made peace between them which resulted in the throne being offered to him. This led to the Nagadipa Stupa being dedicated to the Lord Buddha. A very important feature of this place is the footprints of the Lord Buddha, which is visited by pilgrims from around the world.
The Nagadipa Purana Vihara is an exemplary place signifying the inter-racial harmony in Sri Lanka. This peaceful and religious place is sure to leave you mesmerized!
