Nagarjunakonda, an island in Guntur district is actually a historical Buddhist town. In ancient period, this place was termed as Sri Parvata. The place got its name from Nagarjuna, a Mahayana Buddhist who preached Buddhism in this area. The excavation of the site which was submerged under Nagarjuna dam reveals that the site served as Buddhist University and Monastery which educated many students from across World. The entire Buddhist site is situated amidst of an island in Nagarjunasagar lake. Buddhist Vihara, Medieval Temples, Stupas, Buddha Statue, Fort of 14th century, Buddhist relics etc can be seen here. 2nd century megalith burial ground is also well maintained here. Ferry services are available linking up the island with mainland.
