About Guindy National Park
The Guindy National Park located in Chennai provides natural bliss admits urban civilization. The park covers an area of 2.82 sq. km has been denoted with the status of being the eighth smallest national park in the Indian Subcontinent. Guindy National Park is situated in the protected area of Tamil Nadu within the Governor’s Estate. The Park has children’s park and Snake Park within the campus.
A section of the Original Guindy forests had been converted into a garden in the 1670s and Governor William Langhorne ended up creating a residence there known as the Guindy Lodge. Years later in 1910, the original area was declared to be a reserved forest and then in 1978, it was denoted as a National Park.
The park is characterised by tropical dry evergreen thorn and scrub forest, lakes, streams and a wide range of flora and fauna, which include a variety of plants, mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. Nearly 150 species of birds and 14 species of Mammals are housed the Guindy National Park. The park is nearby the Rajaji Bhavan (Governor’s Residence) and IIT Madras. Kids and adults can have fun time here. The park is also home to 60 plus species of butterflies and spiders. One of the major stars of the park is the black bucks which are a species of antelopes atypical to everywhere else but India.
Other tourist favourites are the Snake Park and the Children’s park The Snake Park exhibits both land and sea snakes. The Children’s Park consists of a variety of rides to keep children engaged.
