About Chilika Lake
Chilka Lake is one of India’s most beautiful and mesmerizing inland lakes, it is spread over three districts in Odisha. From Puri, most tourists prefer going to Chilika Lake via Satapada, about 50 kms from Puri while it is it is 93 KMs away from the city of Berhampur. It is home to various aquatic plants, animals and migratory birds that fly to this place during certain period of the year. This lake stretches over an area of 1,100 sq. kms and finally joins the Bay of Bengal.
Chilika Lake attracts migratory birds during winter months. The lake is a great location to spot Irrawaddy dolphins and red crabs. It will probably test your patience, because dolphins are usually very shy.
This lake consists of many small islands which are known for its bountiful beauty and charm. Nalaban Island, located within the lake, is a bird sanctuary and Nirmaljhar waterfalls are located about 12 KMs from the lake. Satapada is also a great picnic spot from Puri, surrounded by lagoon from three sides.
