About Thiruvanaikovil Jambukeswarar Akilandeswari Temple
Jambukeswarar Temple is a 1800 year old temple built by Kochenkannan, an early Chola King in a place called Thiruvanaikaval. It is located in the same island of Srirangam. Main deity is a Shiv Ling termed as “Jambukeswarar”. His consort is termed as “Akilandeswari”.
The temple is one of the Panchabhootha Sthalam where Lord Shiva is in the form of five elements. Here in Thiruvanaikaval Temple, Lord Shiva is in the form of water. Under the deity in sanctum sanctorum, there is perennial water stream. The Shiv Ling here is also termed as “Appu Lingam” (made out of earth). Once Goddess Parvati teased Lord Shiva meditating for world’s betterment. Lord Shiva got angry and cursed her to go to earth and to do remorse. Goddess Parvati Devi framed a small lingam out of mud and meditated towards Lord Shiva near current temple. Later Lord Shiva moved by her devotion came to earth and taught her Siva Gnana Upadesam. Since Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati preside as a teacher –student duo in this temple, Marriage ritual is not performed for them in this temple. The sanctum sanctorum of Jambukeswarar and Akilandeswari faces each other directly. The architecture is more are less same as Srirangam temple.
