About Bodhi Tree
Lord Buddha attained enlightenment under a 'peepal' (sacred fig/Ficus religiosa) tree called as the Bodhi Tree or Bo . The tree that played such an important role in providing wisdom (called Bodhi in Sanskrit) was rightfully named Bodhi Tree. The Mahabodhi Temple was constructed at the site of the Bodhi Tree, in about 3rd century B.C by Emperor Asoka. The present tree at the temple complex is said to be the direct descendent of this ancient and much-revered tree. It is one of the most important places of pilgrimage for Buddhists and attracts numerous pilgrims and tourists from all over the world to pay their obeisance.
Under the Bodhi tree, you can see Vajrasana, which means the seat of stability. It is a stone platform sitting on which Lord Buddha was supposed to have attained enlightenment. He sat on Vajrasana and meditated in the east direction. This tree holds high religious importance in the Buddhist community.
