About Talakona Waterfalls
Talakona falls are located in Sri Venkateswara National Park in Chittoor district and are the highest waterfalls in Andhra Pradesh at a height of 82 mts (270 feet). Visitors to the Tirupathi temple often visit these falls as they are located about 60 kms from Tirupathi. The area surrounding the waterfall is rich in flora and fauna and so it was declared as Biosphere reserve in the year 1989. Be watchful of slippery rocks when approaching the falls and also keep an eye for monkeys who are all around the falls.
As the name indicates Talakona is the head of hills that is the starting point of the Thirumala Hill Range. Being located in Nerabailu village, Talakona forests has wide range of habitats like Slender Loris, Giant Squirrel, Panther, Porcupine, Sambar, Mouse Deer etc. If you are interested in trekking, then there is a perfidious trek route which leads you up the hill. The presence of herbal and medicinal floras in this forest, gives the water of the falls a healing effect. For tourist’s convenience, there is a 240 meter long canopy ropeway where you can have leisure walk watching the birds, monkeys thronging the Sandalwood trees on either side. Nearby the waterfalls, there is a Temple dedicated to Siddeshwara Swamy (Lord Shiva) where devotees pay visits in huge crowd during Shivrathiri Festival. Besides these attractions, many deep caves are believed to be scattered on the Talakona hills where once sages meditated in peace.
