Silchar is also well-known for its temples and their captivating stories. The ISKCON temple in the city and shrines of Bhuban, Kancha Kanti Kali on the outskirts of the city are a few popular sites of spiritual interest. A few kilometers away from the Bhuban Temple rests the Tunnel of Maniharan, and it is said that this tunnel was used by Hindu God Krishna.
Almost 20 kilometers from the city, Khaspur is the home to the ruins of the great Dimasa Empire. Although the main buildings, like the palace do not exist anymore, travelers can witness the majestic Sun and Lion Gate and a few temples with beautiful work done on them.
The Maibong is a spectacular landscape with temples harboring Stone carvings, sculptures and ruins of an ancient kingdom. 40 KMs from Silchar is Khaspur, which was the ancient capital of the Kachari kingdom. Bhubaneshwar temple is 50 KMs from Silchar and devotees of Lord Shiva visit this temple, especially during the festival of Shivratri. Other places of interest include Sri Kancha Kanti Devi temple, Maniharan tunnel and Gandhibag Park.
The Hajo Powa Mecca in Hajo is a pilgrimage center for followers of Islam. Since it is believed that soil from Mecca was used in the construction of Hajo Powa Mecca, it is considered a holy site. Popularly referred to as ‘The valley of death for birds’, Jatinga is a scenic village situated south of Haflong.
The Martyr’s Tomb situated in the Gandhi Bagh and is home to the tombs of 11 martyrs who immensely contributed towards the Bengali Language Movement of 1961. The city is filled with centers for leisure and entertainment, so travelers are in a treat when it comes to shopping and restaurants.
