About Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park
Formerly called the Black Mountain National Park, the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park is the third largest protected area in Central Bhutan covering an expansive area of an estimated seventeen hundred square kilometer. The national reserve has a flourishing number of nearly four hundred types of birds, thereby earning the sobriquet of a ‘Birds Paradise.’ Besides that, a large variety of animals like the golden langur, tiger, musk deer, Himalayan black bear and many more are found here. The rivers flowing through the reserve only enhance the lush beauty of the greenery.
The Park boasts of an ecosystem where the people live in harmony with the nature and it can be observed via treks which walk tourists through the villages of Adha and Rukha in the Wangdue district. A 6 days/5 nights community based tourism has also been initiated for this purpose, where sightseers have the opportunity to have a first-hand experience of authentic village life by home-stays with the inhabitants. Fishing by the banks Hara-chhu River continues to be a popular activity.
There a number of accommodations available at affordable prices near the Park, however reservations have to be made in advance due to extensive tourist hustle-bustle almost all round the year. While visiting this wildlife sanctuary is a spectacular experience in itself, it is inadvisable to holiday during the monsoon and winter seasons beginning from July and culminating in December.
