About Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary
Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is located Darjeeling Wild Life division and comes under Sukna Forest Range. Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of almost 160 KM² and is 13 KMs from Siliguri and 28 KMs from Bagdogra airport. It became a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1959 in efforts to save Indian bison and Royal Bengal Tiger which were on verge of extinction. This place is a natural habitat of diverse fauna and flora. Dense bushes and thick woody trees are present all over. Wildlife include the rare animals like Indian bison, Royal Bengal Tiger, Mountain goats, Elephants, Fishing cats, Barking deer, Chetal and Samber etc. The sanctuary also has a wide variety of birds. A forest bungalow at Sukna can be reserved for accommodation but special permission from forest department is required.
