About Terracotta Temple of Bishnupur
Ancient town of Bishnupur is about 132 KMs from Kolkata & 38 KMs from Bankura town and is renowned for its terracotta temples and beautiful Baluchari saaris made of Tussar silk. The town is dotted with numerous such temples and ruins that have unique architecture. There are all and all-16 temples in the city. Some important temples are Lalji temple, Malleshwar temple, Kalachand, Radha Madhab, Radhagobinda temple, Jorbangla, Madan Mohan temple, Radhashyam temple, Shyam Rai temple, and Rasmancha. The town artists also sell artifacts, pottery and even jewelry made of terracotta.
The Bishnupur mela (fair) is held in the last week of December every year, followed by the Bishnupur utsav, a classical music and dance festival. Visit the Pancha Ratna temple of Shyam Rai, Madanmohan temple, Jorebangla temple of Keshto Rai and Rasmancha. Bishnupur is a home for celebrated classical musical gharana Dalmadal Kaman.
Malleshwar temple is an old one and was constructed by Bir Singh in 1622. The forte of the temple is the base moldings and stone elephants. The Jor-bangla temple is one of the finest monuments in the city. Raghunath Roy in 1655 had built this temple. The temple is beautifully adorned with terrocotta walls from both inside and outside.
