About Bassein Fort
By reaching the Vasai, a village in the Konkan regions of Maharashtra State, you can see the majestic Bassein Fort or Vasai Fort. As per historical facts, the name “Bassein” has strong link with the native name of Vasa Konkani Northern Tribals. The village and fort lies closer to Vasai Railway Station. In around 14th century, Portuguese Mariners came across the fort which was then renovated by Sultanate of Cambay. Their first attempt of seizing the fort ended up in vain. However, later Portuguese took over the fort. Bassein Fort was under control of Maratha King Chimaji Appa for a while, after whom, the fort was controlled by British. The remnants of fort look over the Vasai and Bhayander creeks. Buildings of Portuguese were almost in ruined state, but the lay outs of the building can be guessed from the leftover walls and arches. There are 17th century Portugal Churches within the fort. Local people say that during weekdays, it is not advisable for tourists and women to visit the fort as there are many illegal activities carried out within it.
