About Patnitop
A small and peaceful town out of reach of all the rubbles and noises of city life, Patnitop is located on a picturesque plateau of the Shiwalik range of mountains, in the lap of Jammu in the Udhampur District. Its grand position on a plateau in the Siwaliks with the gorgeous river Chenab flowing by makes it a place much like those stunning locations they show in horror movies, only, you feel no horror, just pure unadulterated pleasure. A state that is known for its natural beauty, scenic landscapes and pilgrim sites Jammu holds Patnitop as its finest of attractions.
This place is full of meadows and cedar forests, so if you want to make a quick getaway with a picnic basket and a book of Wordsworth’s poems, you just found the most ideal place. With the lush greenery and the mountains, it’s not too difficult to imagine that Wordsworth was writing about Patnitop.
Patnitop’s original name was “Patan Da Talab” meaning the Pond of the princess, which the British couldn’t spell and thus became Patnitop. A place that looks lavishly grand with lush greenery and speckled with luminescent lakes and streams fringed by mighty mountains of Himalayas during summer, it is a stark contrast to itself during winter when each and every corner of this wonderful place is artistically cloaked by snow.
Trekkers need not feel left out because Patnitop has a treat in store for them. Billo ki Powri will probably tax your legs a bit if you are not much of a walker but you need not worry because there’s no way that you can remember that your legs even exist when you see the Kud Town from the pinnacle after a climb of 270 steps. Supposedly built by Raja Chenani, to make the town of Batote accessible, this staircase is really a wondrous piece of architecture.
If you can brave the dawn, then you stand a chance to suffer from some serious heart malady because your heart will stop when you see the pre to early morning sky. The riot of colours is unimaginably breath-taking. The lovers of adventure sports would have no reason to worry about boredom. There’s the option of facilitating paragliding joyrides at Dawariyal. The Sanasar Lake is located just 20 Kms away from Patnitop but it can be seen from a point in Patnitop itself. This is an ideal place to indulge the desires that you could tell your grandchildren about because you could camp in the woods, do a bit of abseiling, rock climbing or simply walk walk and walk. Ah, the pleasure of it!
This calm town is quite famous for the myriad adventure activities it offers. Apart from the more common trekking, rafting, golfing and paragliding, skiing is a well-known and preferred winter sport activity here. A local sweet named ‘Patisa’ is very famous in Patnitop and is a must try delicacy. Patnitop is not for those who thrive for night life and city luxury, but it is the right choice for those who relish silence, nature and adventure activities all of which are abundant here.
