About Koundinya Wildlife Sanctuary
Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Andhra Pradesh and is elephant reserve as well. After about two hundred years, Asian elephants returned here making it the only sanctuary in the whole state housing Asian elephants. Today, there are around 78 elephants present here. River Kaigal and River Kaundinya flow through this sanctuary. This place is characterized by high hills, deep valleys, dry deciduous forests and thorny scrubs. Acacia and bamboo are the most abundant flora. You can also expect to spot yellow throated bulbul, panther, porcupine and jackal. The best time to visit is October – April when the weather is pleasant. It is better to stay in the forest guest house and enjoy the natural beauty of this place. However, over grazing and illegal wood collection is slowly destroying the sanctuary.
