Sri Hemkund Sahib is guduwara (sikh religious place) set high in the Himalayas, this place can be reached only by walking from Gobindghat. Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, is believed to have meditated in his previous life at Hemkund Sahib. The gudwara is set next to a frozen lake at an height of 4329 mts. In winter, it is impossible to come here because of snow. In summer, the scene is still frozen, the ice fresh beneath blowing mist. Starting point of the trek, Govindghat is about 275 kms from Rishikesh.
There is no accomadation available at Hemkund so it is important to head back by 2 pm to make it back to Govindghat before nightfall.
