About Sri Krishna Matha

Sri Krishna Matha was established by Vaishnavite saint, Sri Madhwacharya in 13th century. According to Hindu Mythology, Sri Madhwacharya saved the people on a ship in Malpe Beach. They in turn gifted the saint statues of Lord Balrama and Lord Krishna. He built a temple for lord Krishna in Udupi. Also, few people believe that the saint found the idol of Sri Krishna in a large Gopichand Ball. After his period, Saint Madhwacharya handed over the charges of temple to his eight disciples. These disciples framed Ashta (Eight) Mathas (Pejavara, Puttige, Palimaru, Adamaru, Sodhe, Kaniyooru, Shirur and Krishnapura) and took care of the Krishna Mutt. Each head of these Mathas manages the Krishna Mutt for every two years on rotation basis.

The temple has a window called Navagraha Kitiki. There are nine holes on this silver plated window. Devotees are allowed to worship Lord Krishna only though this hole. There is a religious story behind this kind of worship. In ancient times, a devotee named Kannakadasa was denied entry to the Krishna Mutt. However, being a pious devotee, Kannakadasainvolved in very intense prayer for Lord Krishna. On seeing this, Idol of Lord Krishna turned towards the direction from where the devotee is praying. The wall between Kannakadasa and Krishna Statue broken into pieces. Through this hole on wall, Kannakadasa worshipped Lord Krishna in his heavenly form. Because of this religious myth, even now the devotees are worshipping through a window which is built over the hole created in ancient times.
