About Membartsho, Burning Lake
Also known as ‘Burning Lake’, Membartsho it is actually a deep pool which is in the gorge of the river Tangchu. The lake is situated along the road that leads to Ura and Tang and to reach this place you have to walk just for about 5-6 minutes. It is actually a sacred site rather than a tourist spot. For the people of Bhutan this place has a lot of spiritual significance. In the early 16th century, Pema Lingpa, the disciple of Guru Rinpoche, recovered some sacred religious treasures diving within the deep pool that too only with a lit butter lamp. When he returned he found that the lamp was still burning. From this happening, the lake got its name as ‘Burning Lake’. You can also see numerous colourful prayer flags everywhere around the river gorge. But be aware not to enter the water body as it is considered impious due to the holiness of the lake.
