Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, A mecca for Buddhist all around the globe and a surreal beauty worth visiting. It’s no great revelation to learn that the World- Heritage–listed Lumbini is of huge religious connotation and attracts Buddhist pilgrims from around the world.
Lumbini is located in the Rupandehi district of Nepal and is stretches over an area of 4kms with significant landmarks scattered throughout the area. Situated 22km west of Bhairawa, the divine heart of Lumbini is Maya Devi Temple, which represents the spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama. In the neighboring holy garden you’ll find the pillar of Ashoka, ancient ruins of stupas, and maroon- and saffron-robed monks assembling under a sprawling Bodhi (Pipal) fig adorned with prayer flags. Maya Devi Temple is set in the middle of the large 4km by 2.5km park grounds recognized as the Lumbini Development Zone. The Maya devi temple is one of the most significant temples found here, the temple stands on the exact spot where it is believed that queen Mayadevi gave birth to Sidhartha Gautam.
Planned by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange in 1978, it’s still a work in development that comprises landscaped lakes and numerous monasteries that have been or are being built by Buddhist communities from around the world. The adjoining areas have stupas built by Ashoka on his visit to Lumbini and a pillar with his name on it. Lumbini is not only a religious place but also is one of the most pure and brilliant product of nature and human minds, included as one of the four other significant Buddhist holy areas, Lumbini is listed in the world heritage sites as well. It’s a 9 hours’ drive from Kathmandu and 30 minutes’ drive from the nearest Airport, Bhairahawa.
