Bhangarh once famous for its town planning and systematic layout of temples and markets is lying in ruins now. But the ruins speak for itself the tale of the city that was so well planned and systematic even in those times. This city was founded in 1631 by Madho Singh who was the younger brother of Man Singh of Ajmer and was later abandoned for reasons unknown.
Town is very famous as one of the most haunted places in India and most people visit to experience the thrill of visiting such a place. Legend has it that whenever a house is built in the area its roof collapses. Villagers say that anybody who stays there after dark does not return from the ruins. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has put a sign board which says, "Staying after sunset is strictly prohibited in this area."
Thanks to the urban legend of sorts and haunted stories, Bhangarh has become quite an exciting destination for youngsters from Delhi and Jaipur. Bhangarh is only about 80 kms from Jaipur and 90 kms from Alwar city. If coming via bus, Dausa is the nearest bus station.
Bhangarh is quite safe to visit but entry or stay during night is strictly not allowed. There are ASI and police guards stationed at check post. Bhangarh fort entry is allowed only after 6am in the morning. Places near Bhangarh that can be visited include Kankwari Fort, Chand Baori (Abhaneri Stepwells) and Sariska. Dausa is the nearest railway station.
